Roestende fietsen, ingestorte bruggen en kapotte afvalvaten zijn bekende beelden van corrosie. IJzer, staal, bijna alle metalen en ook sommige keramische materialen kampen ermee. Architecten maken er juist gebruik van. Wie kent ze niet, de kathedralen met een mooi groen corrosielaagje op het koperen dak? Maar het is niet altijd zichtbaar, bijvoorbeeld in de dragende constructie van een brug. En het zorgt voor miljardenschades aan wagenparken, gebouwen, fabrieken en boorplatforms. Corrosie is een samenspel van ionen en elektronen, dat begint bij contact van het materiaal met een elektronenacceptor, zoals zuurstof, en vocht. Corrosiepreventie is er dan ook op gericht om deze vorming van metaalionen te voorkomen of er voor te zorgen dat er geen contact is met vocht. Dat kan met speciale coatings of extra lagen van een zogenoemd opofferingsmetaal (galvaniseren) die het onderliggende metaal beschermen. Maar vooral de moeilijker zichtbare vormen (spanningscorrosie) van corrosie vormen het grootste probleem. Ook moderne legeringen (metaalmengsels), zoals roestvast staal en aluminiumlegeringen voor de vliegtuigbouw, hebben hiermee te maken. Slimme analysemethodes moeten helpen om die corrosie op microschaal te ontmaskeren.
